Approaching tough issues with games
When Casal de Joves HYPERLINK TO WEBSITE asked young people in youth clubs across Barcelona about drugs education they found that existing approaches were not engaging for young people and the project “Tu Saps, tu Tries!” was born.
“Tu Saps, tu Tries” aimed to create resources for youth clubs and associations that could be used for drug prevention, but would be fun and engaging for young people at the clubs. The result was a game that means that young people can both have a good time and learn about issues surrounding drug use.
The game consists of a game board, a dice, “fitxes”, cards (150 of each type) and an hourglass. It is played as a team competition where each team must pass certain challenges in order to win cards . . .the wining team being who collects all the different cards possible. Challenges include answering questions, using mime for your team to guess word or phrase and ‘taboo’ where one team member must give clues without using banned words and descriptions.
All the content for the game was developed alongside young people, based on proposals for questions, concerns and knowledge from a series of workshops held in young clubs and other institutions across Barcelona. The first model of the game was then tested with a group of young people who gave the go-ahead for the game and decided the final layout.
